to conservative audiences. so two weeks ago, david corn and ryan grim at "the huffington post" posted video of romney talking to wealthy donors in florida. deriding the 47% of the country that he said did not pay federal income taxes and who were dependent on the government and victims and who he would never be able to reach because he would not be able to purr suede them to take responsibility for their lives. >> i'll never convince 47% of the country to take personal responsibility and care for their lives. those comments he describes his disdain for half the country, those comments have had a measurable impact on the campaign. in the new poll just released in the last couple hours, people say those remarks from mr. romney made them feel more negative than positive toward mr. romney by a 22-point margin. those results match other polling that shows those comments alienated undecided voters. regardless of what you think of the substance of that it statement from mr. romney, it did turn the whole republican pundit class against him, called every candidate in a contested race to distance the

's issues for "the huffington post." thank you both for your time tonight. erin, how bad is the todd akin problem for republicans? >> this was the race that wasn't even supposed to be competitive and now they are saying, well, he can probably still win due to hatred of president obama in that state. >> when you say probably, and he wasn't even supposed to be competitive, he was supposed to win? >> he was supposed to win, yeah. this is a state that has become more conservative. president obama really isn't fighting there. the biggest problem is that he made it about more than abortion, he made it about rape victims. so now we've created this opportunity for claire mccaskill who hasn't been particularly popular in this state to tie him in with these really unsensitive remarks that imply that women are lying and also have totally fake science behind them that is very popular in the anti-choice movement. >> when you combine that, laura, with the fact that at first when these legitimate rape comments came out, republicans started running from them, now they are stuck with them, let me give you

'm joined by howard fineman with "the huffington post." also we have romney's -- let's take a look at this howard, romney's 47% comments had a lasting impact on his standing. "the washington post" reported just today, quote, in the two weeks since the surreptitious video of the remarks surfaced, they have pierced the national consciousness in a way few blunders do. in the closing stretch of the presidential campaign, the moment has become a defining element of romney's candidacy. new poll by pew shows how deep these comments penetrated. 67% say they knew romney made those comments. that's of the whole country. of those people, 55% said they had a negative reaction toward hearing them. the only thing in politic that is is worse than voters deciding they don't like you is when voters decide you don't like them. howard, what a great turn of phrase by alex castellanos when voters sense you don't like them. >> well, here in colorado, chris, the obama campaign is certainly not letting people forget those comments from that private fund-raiser back in may. talking to people here, they say

and his campaign. but we have just got from "the huffington post" a statement that mr. ryan made, a sound bite, about americans that sounds very similar. let me play this to you for the first time and get your reaction. this was a year ago, paul ryan last november, talking about his estimate of how many people are dependent on government. listen to this. >> before too long we could become a society we were never, ever intended to be. we could become a society where the net majority of americans are takers, not makers. 70% of americans want the american dream. they believe in the american idea. only 30% want the welfare state. >> governor, when you have a candidate for president talking about 40% are moochers, you have the vice presidential candidate saying that we're living in a society with more takers than makers, and 30% of the country want a welfare state, i mean, what is that saying to the american people as they head to the polls in 35 days? >> well, it's pathetic, is what it is? it says to the american people that both members of the republican ticket totally out of touch with amer

dismissed that way, injury added by insult. i'm joined by chuck todd and howard fineman with "the huffington post." the latest poll shows among likely voters the president leads 49% to 46% for romney. that's down net two points from two weeks ago when the president was up by five. to what to you attribute the movement, chuck todd? >> well, first of all, the more important number has always been the president sitting at 49% or 50%. i would go through his job approval rating at 49%, his ballot test at 49%, those converge, and that's what matters and 49% puts you in the, quote, re-elect zone. what's affecting romney, this is something we've been watching there is an enthusiasm gap among core republican voters among core democratic groups. overall there's a ten-point advantage among those republicans who call themselves nines or tens when on a scale of one to ten asked how interested they are in this election. there's been a ten-point gap pretty consistent all year. that's why for instance on the registered voter number, the president has a seven-point lead and it shrinks more than in half down

popped up on the huffington post. >> gthe good news is survey aftr survey, poll after poll still shows that we are a center right 70/30 country. 70% of americans want the american dream. they believe in the american idea. only 30% want the welfare state. >> so, again, just context for our viewers that was paul ryan, this is a speech from last november. the whole speech has been on youtube since last fall. so my question to you, howie kurtz, are there really substantive points to be scored here by drudging up these all videos? >> there can be. i don't have any problem with it, people on either side drudging up old videos. it helps if the video you're drudging up has never been seen or heard before, then it has some shock value. there can be substantive and revealing comments in what people say when they think the spotlight is not on them. but in the case of this particular obama speech at hampton university in virginia in 2007, he delivered it in front of a bunch of reporters. cameras there. the surprise factor has been lost here. >> you covered the media. as we mentioned it right wing

on "huffington post" about ten days ago. you've really seen this since, that women are really driving the surge in obama's polling numbers. a double digit, at times a ten or higher gender gap. and when a democrat leads and a democrat benefits from a high gender gap, then a democrat wins. it's higher than average that we see in presidential campaigns. >> okay. worst? >> paul ryan. paul ryan, he -- you know, he hasn't really changed his debate at all. he's not helping in wisconsin. >> okay. ladies, thanks so much. susan, margie, molly, appreciate it. see you back here tomorrow at noon eastern. but stay with us, craig melvin is in the house. he's up next. i'm alex witt. have a great day. thor's couture gets the most rewards of any small business credit card. your boa!
